Your biggest leadership gap isn't at the top.

It's in the middle.

It's among the chairs, directors, and supervisors who manage conflict, mentor new hires, and steer their departments through crisis after crisis—often without any formal training.

Most of these people became leaders by being good at...something else.

Often, faculty and staff spend years becoming experts—in research, teaching, even operations.

Leadership isn't a natural next step.
It's a different job entirely.

When leaders are promoted without preparation, they're set up to fail.

And so is everyone they lead.

When leaders are promoted without preparation, they're set up to fail.

And so is everyone they lead.

That's not what anybody intends.

But when budgets are tight and crises feel endless, professional development is easy to ignore—or cut.

Unfortunately, skipping leadership training doesn’t eliminate the cost.

It just moves it.

You pay in low morale.
Unaddressed conflict.

Turnover. Stalled initiatives. Lost momentum.

Or you pay in actual cash:
Retention counter-offers. Interim hires. Search consultants.

You’ll pay the cost in broken trust—your biggest hidden expense.

In a previous job, I was never offered leadership development like this. This is the kind of thing that changes careers.
 -participant

This on-campus workshop helps your chairs, directors, and staff supervisors strengthen the skills they use every day: managing teams, navigating conflict, and keeping their departments on track...even during existential crises.

This isn't a stepping-stone to a VIP role.

It's just-in-time training for the job they're doing now.

Over two days, participants will
Work through 10 lessons distilled from leadership theory
Apply those lessons to campus-specific case studies
Use small-group coaching to solve real leadership challenges
Reflect on how to lead from values within a complex institutional system
Develop action plans they'll use as soon as they get back to work

The workshop is grounded in research but doesn't leave people in the leadership weeds.

It gives them tools and language they can use immediately—in team meetings, moments of tension, and difficult decisions that require clear judgment.

10 1/2 Lessons for Leaders helps the people managing your people lead with clarity, connection, and confidence...even in the chaos of 2025.

This is one of the best days of professional development I've participated in.

 -Peg McCormick

Your people don't need another workshop.

They need to learn to lead.

We know from decades of research that lectures and PowerPoints aren't great teachers.

So we've ditched the corporate training model and designed a workshop like the best college classrooms, with...

✅ Scaffolded learning
✅ Practical application
✅ Collaborative problem-solving
✅ Personal relevance

This isn't a polished lecture hall or performance space.

It's more like a messy lab: a place to build foundational skills, experiment, and figure out what actually works.

All anchored in a research-backed framework.

This is learning that sticks, long after the workshop ends.

It's the kind of preparation your leaders deserved.

The structure of this workshop gave me concrete strategies that I could immediately apply.

The 10 ½ Lessons Framework

 10 LESSONS

LEARNED IN ORDER
Over two days, we move step by step through the 10 lessons. Each one is grounded in research but distilled into a simple, conversational phrase—so leaders can actually use it when they need it.

CASE STUDIES

CUSTOMIZED FOR YOUR CONTEXT

At key moments, we pause to apply the lessons in carefully crafted case studies written specifically for each cohort. These aren’t generic scenarios; they’re tailored to the actual leadership challenges participants are facing. This makes the problems—and the solutions—real for everyone in the room.

 COMMUNITY

THAT LASTS
Leaders struggle in isolation, so we use purposeful strategies (not awkward icebreakers) to build real connections among participants.

Leaders gain a network of peers who truly get what they’re facing.

THE LEADERSHIP FRAMEWORK

Each lesson builds on the last, creating a logical scaffolded framework.

The lessons are grouped into three tiers, creating a framework for quickly thinking through -- and solving -- leadership problems as the arise.

THE EXTRA 1/2 LESSON

COMPASSIONATE COACHING

Every great leader has a way of tying things together so their leadership feels cohesive & coherent.

So we do that, too.

Participants learn a simple, repeatable skill— compassionate coaching—they can practice repeatedly alone, with a trusted inner circle, and even with their teams. It’s the glue that makes all 10 lessons actually work in real leadership situations.

Carole is AMAZING!! She modeled everything she taught in a way that was genuine and appeared effortless (when I know it is far from effortless). Thank you for a thoughtful workshop that truly took care of people while teaching them.

 Thirty years in leadership.
Hundreds of colleagues at dozens of institutions who trust me.

I've spent decades practicing these skills with my own teams...

teaching other leaders and learning from their feedback...

and facilitating (and updating and revising) this workshop.

I'm known for leading my own teams to achieve what looks impossible. My secret? Building relationships so strong that folks can do really hard things together...and have fun doing it.

I've been training leaders for 15 years, teaching them everything I know about building an exceptional team of folks who love working together.

Hundreds of leaders -- at all levels, from more than 20 institutions -- have participated in this workshop.

I can't wait to share it with you.

The very best workshop I have ever attended.

Leaders at any level.

This started as a program for new department chairs and quickly grew to include academic program directors. It has since been expanded to include anybody who leads a team, whether faculty or staff. This workshop benefits anybody leading people, no matter their functional area or level of experience.

Why? Because people are people no matter what work they do. Leading people is fairly universal.

We offer separate versions of the workshop for faculty leaders and other campus leaders. The content and framework is the same, but the case studies are customized to the folks in the room. It's one of the many ways this workshop is unqiue.

Hands down, this is best as a full two-day, immersive experience.

If you need mini-workshops spread over several weeks or months, we can do that too. The amount of time people spend in the training, and the price, will change.

The workshop is a mix of active conversation, reading and reflection, and individual planning. We will organize those activities to meet your schedule and deliver the workshop in a way your leaders will enjoy. Please note that "moving the workshop online" will not cost less, and engagement from participants will likley decrease over time.

We intentionally break the paradigm where inclusion is “extra” training.

Leading people is fundamentally about inclusion and psychological safety. Exceptional leaders value everyone on their team. We show them how.

As many as you like.

This workshop works incredibly well with large groups. It also can deepen connections for a small leadership team.

We've taught this to groups as small as a dozen and as large as 100+.For very large groups (significantly more than 100) the price will increase so that we can bring additional facilitators. Let's talk about whether this works for you.

We'll work with you to accommodate your needs.

Either!

This workshop is incredibly dynamic in person – you can feel the buzz in the room.

But we’re skilled with hybrid and hyflex learning, so if you’re looking for an online workshop, we’ll bring that to life.

Let's talk about how your team likes to learn and what's best for your institution.

Please note that the pricing advertised on this page is for an in-person workshop. A virtual or hybrid workshop will be priced differently, according to your needs.

For a flat fee of $20,000, we’ll train up to 100 of the leaders on your campus.

The fee excludes your internal costs (such as travel and hospitality for workshop attendees).

If you’re a smaller organization, you can partner with another group to increase the number of participants.

Discounts are available for women's colleges, community colleges, HSIs, and other institutions serving under-represented students.

We’ll support you with registration processes so it’s easy for everyone to sign up.
